Manchester United are in red hot form since the restart or even before that. They are currently on a 15 game unbeaten run in all competitions scoring 38 times and conceding only 4 times in the keeping 11 cleans sheets in the process.
Bruno Fernandes seems to be the last piece of the jigsaw in Ole’s puzzle and has lifted the united spirits since joining the red devils. Since the restart united have looked brilliant with the dream pairing of Bruno and world cup winner Paul Pogba pulling the strings in the midfield linking up with each other and united have been blowing away their opponents with ease.
It may seem that it is the front 5 who have been exceptional, indeed they have been, but the key to United’s attack lies in the midfield with Nemanja Matic who sits in front of their defense providing freedom for the likes of Bruno, Pogba , Rashford, Martial to show their quality in the final third.
Only a few months ago it seemed as if Matic was on his way out of Old Trafford but since coming out of injury after the turn of the year he has been a rock in the Man United midfield. United have managed 16 clean sheets in the 23 matches where Matic has started and it was Matic who provided United with some stability after their first half disaster I the carabao cup semi-final against city as a result of which they didn’t concede any and scored one in the second half. Nemanja Matic may not get all the praise he deserves but he surely has a calming influence on the United players.
Not only is he a defensive rock but also has exceptional ball retention qualities using his upper body strength. He dictates the tempo of the game and plays a vital role in the transition from defense to attack as we saw last weekend with the sublime pass for Mason Greenwood which led to United’s 3rd goal.
For his amazing, consistent displays on the field Manchester United extended his contract to 2023 on the 6th of July. Many might say that it might not be the right choice to give a new 3 year deal to a 31 year old as doesn’t seem logical but according to me , it might be the right choice as he can play a couple more seasons and it might be of great help to Scott McTominay who can also learn from the 2 time Premier League Champion and certainly a great defensive midfielder of our generation.
