UEFA Champions League Quarter-final preview and predictions

The Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League ended on saturday which means the Quarter-finals are soon to be upon us. Here is a preview of the upcoming round along with our predictions for each match.

Quarter Final fixtures:

  • Paris Saint-Germain FC vs Atalanta B.C
  • RB Leipzig vs Atletico Madrid
  • FC Barcelona vs FC Bayern Munich
  • Manchester City vs Olympique Lyon

All of the above fixtures will be single-legged fixtures unlike the traditional two-legged fixtures held in Lisbon. To know more about that, read a previous article https://geniusgrape.com/uefa-champions-league-returns-for-16-days/.

Preview and Predictions:

Paris Saint-Germain Fc vs Atalanta B.C:

If you’re seeing this fixture for the first time, you may think that this a no-brainer win for PSG, but that is not necessarily the case. This is because PSG have only played 2 official matches of football in the last 5 months. They did come out top in some club friendlies, but they were against some relatively weaker teams.

Atalanta on the other hand have just finished their Serie A campaign a week ago finishing third in the standings below the likes of Juventus and Inter Milan. This is the first season Atalanta has played in the UEFA Champions League and it remains to be seen whether they can continue this run of theirs.

Although PSG have had significantly less game time than their opponents, their star power of Neymar and co cannot be underestimated even with a few key players like Verrati and Mbappe doubtful to play.

Geniusgrape predicts: Win for Paris Saint-germain

Atletico Madrid vs RB Leipzig:

This is a relatively safer match to predict with RB Leipzig missing their talisman Timo Werner who has recently signed a deal with Chelsea F.C.

Atletico lose two players in the form of Angel Correa and Sime Vrsaljko, of which the former’s blow will be felt, who have tested positive for Covid-19 and therefore cannot play the fixture.

Even with two players out, Diego Simeone’s men should cruise through this round having defeated the defending champions Liverpool FC in the round of 16.

Geniusgrape predicts: Win for Atletico Madrid

FC Barcelona vs FC Bayern Munich:

Perhaps the most enticing fixture in this round, two heavyweights clash in the form of the Catalan giants and the German champions, who are the favourites to win this tournament.

Barcelona have not had a pleasing season this far, losing out the La Liga to rivals Real Madrid alongwith the Copa del rey to Valencia FC. Messi and Co will look to make up for it by chasing European success this season.

They have just come off beating Napoli 3-1 convincingly in the second leg of their Round of 16 fixture qualifying 4-2 on aggregate. With key players Arturo Vidal and Sergio Busquets returning from suspension for this round.

FC Bayern on the other hand are as strong as ever cruising past Chelsea 4-1 on Saturday night qualifying an astonishing 7-1 on aggregate and look set to continue their run.

Geniusgrape predicts: Win for FC Bayern Munich

Manchester City vs Olympique Lyon:

The last fixture to be played in this round is between Manchester City, who are eager for a taste of European success come in strong with a 2-1 win over Spanish Champions Real Madrid CF on friday night to qualify 4-2 on aggregate.

Lyon on the other hand qualify to the quarter-finals in controversial circumstances having been given a penalty against Juventus in their 2nd leg which many feel had been wrongly awarded leading them to qualify on account of away goals.

Pep Guardiola’s men have been looking strong and look to enter this fixture at almost full strength missing the likes of striker Sergio Aguero who’s boots are expected to be filled by Gabriel Jesus.
